Healing from Trauma with EMDR Therapy: Trusting God in the Process

Trauma affects the brain in complex ways, often leaving us stuck in survival mode—long after the danger is over. As Christians, we believe God can heal all wounds, but that doesn’t mean we have to suffer silently. EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is one of the most well-researched, evidence-based treatments for trauma recovery, endorsed by the APA, VA, and WHO for PTSD and trauma-related disorders (American Psychological Association, 2017; World Health Organization, 2013).

In simple terms, EMDR helps the brain “unstick” painful memories and process them in a healthy, adaptive way. It’s not about erasing the past—it’s about reprocessing it so it no longer holds power over you. Through bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or sounds), your brain activates its natural healing processes. Research shows that EMDR can reduce symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression and improve overall functioning (Shapiro, 2018).

As believers, we know that God is our ultimate healer (Psalm 147:3), and tools like EMDR can be part of His provision. When we combine this clinical method with prayer and a safe therapeutic space, we invite the Holy Spirit into the healing process.
